Why Spinning?

Learn to Spin

Ever thought of spinning? Come and have a go. Spend a few days in the country, meet the sheep and spin their wool. Absorb the peace and quiet of the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of town or city.

Try turning the treadmill of life into the tread of a spinning wheel as you take a real fleece and transform it into a woollen yarn from which you can produce a garment that is all your own work. You won’t spin enough for a jumper in a couple of days but you should manage a woolly hat, or you could have a go at weaving if you don’t fancy the knitting and take home a little purse or bag. While you are here, walk that (extra) mile and listen to the sounds of the country. Hear the songbirds, the tractors churning or the wind blowing in the trees. Failing that, listen to the silence – it will hurt almost as much as the blast of a disco but do less damage to your eardrums.

Spinning can be even more relaxing than knitting. No clacking needles and the gentle whirr as the wheel goes round can be as therapeutic as watching a water fall. In addition, your fingers are softened by the lanolin in the wool. Plus you have the positive experience of creating. If your yarn does not, at first, come out as smooth as you would like, think how effective it would look in a rug or wall hanging. Create your own very special and unique picture. What a buzz that could give you. Or create a funky bag or purse, coaster or place mat.

History on the Hoof

While you are here, on the Cambridgeshire / Herts / Essex boarder, you have the chance to see the sheep that the wool comes from. These are no ordinary sheep but a sample of Rare Breeds ranging from Soays, little primitive sheep with horns and short brown hairy fleeces to big cuddly Leicester Longwool with their fine lustre long staple white wool. Also included are black Hebrideans and mouse brown Manx Loghtans, so although we do no dying of the wool, there will be a selection of natural colours to choose from. See history from a different perspective and see how animals have evolved as our farming methods developed.

Courses

Courses are designed for the personal touch so places are limited to only 4 people per course, as we want to ensure that you return home feeling that you have accomplished something special.

Courses run both at weekends and during the week:

Weekend courses from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon

Weekdays courses from Wednesday morning to Friday lunchtime

Course price includes all materials, the use of equipment and meals = £125.00
